Limits

How many devices can one server manage? Up to 30,000. OADM refuses an add that would go over this, and nothing is stored. Scale tests run with 5,000 devices and 50,000 tasks.

How many entries fit in the credential list? 20. When OADM adds devices, it tries them in the order you added them, at most 10 per device, so a device never locks you out.

How many tags can I use? Up to 500 tags, and up to 20 tags per device. A tag name is at most 32 characters.

How many roles can I create? Up to 50.

How large can an import file be? At most 2 MB and 10,000 addresses. OADM checks up to 16 addresses at the same time.

How long are tasks kept? The tasks pane shows the newest 10,000 tasks plus every running one. A task keeps at most 1,000 log entries.

How long are log files kept? 14 days, and at most 30 files. They roll daily or at 20 MB (server) / 10 MB (client).

How often does OADM check my devices? It checks the status of every device every 60 seconds, and reads all details again every 10 minutes. It also does a full read after every task on a device.

How long does a discovery scan run? 30 seconds by default. You can set 5 to 300 seconds in Settings, or stop the scan early.

Can one client connect to several servers at once? Not yet. A client works with one server at a time.

General

Which AXIS OS versions work? Current AXIS OS works fully. Older firmware, back to 8.40, can be managed, but some tasks need a newer version, for example PKI certificates need 11.11 and Device configuration needs 12.5. The context menu shows which devices can't run a task and why.

Can I import my devices from AXIS Device Manager? Yes. Use Add > Import from ADM with a device export from ADM. Addresses, logins and tags are taken over; everything else is read from the devices. Export without encryption, and delete the file afterwards, because it holds the passwords in plain text.

Can I set the first password on new devices? Yes. Factory-default devices show Password not set. Set the password while adding them, or later with Set password in the context menu.

What happens when a device gets a new IP address? OADM follows it. It checks the device by its MAC address at the new address before moving the record, and devices added by DNS name keep their name.

Which ports must be open to the devices? TCP 443 and 80 for management, and TCP 554 (RTSP) for live video and the Metadata Monitor. Cameras behind a port forward can use another RTSP port, set under OADM > RTSP port in the context menu.

Which video codecs does the live preview use? H.265 or H.264, whichever the camera offers and your computer can decode. MJPEG is not used. Video is decoded on the graphics card when possible.

Is there a dark and a light theme? Yes. Dark is the default. Switch it per computer under Settings > This computer.

Which languages are available? English only for now.

How do I back up OADM? Use Settings > Backup and restore, either Back up now or the automatic backups. A backup also restores on another computer. Before every database upgrade, OADM also saves a copy of the database itself.

What happens if master.key is lost? The server starts with a new key and removes the passwords it can no longer read. Those devices show Credentials required; use Log in in the context menu to enter their passwords again.

Can I turn off features I don't need? Yes. Most features are plugins, and administrators can turn them on or off on the Plugins page. Several are off by default.

Are third-party plugins safe? A plugin runs with the server's rights, so only install plugins you trust. Plugins contributed to OADM are reviewed before they become part of a release.

Why are the installers not signed? Signing is planned. Until then, check each download against SHA256SUMS.txt from the release.
